How to do...Boxer Braids!

05:20:00

I absolutely love the ever-changing world of the season’s hottest hair trends. It fascinates me what’s in and what’s not, and I am forever following lots of accounts on Instagram for the latest hair inspiration.  I know I'm a little late to the boxer braids look, or as they were originally known as; Dutch plaits.
This look has been popularised lately by none other than Kim Kardashian and her younger sister Khloe, who are huge fans of this fierce look. I was rather skeptical at first, but now I have to say this trend is not only practical, but looks super cute too. Plus, its everywhere, so you will instantly look very cool and on-trend ;)

Some people say they are easy to do on yourself, but personally I am useless at doing this kind of style without help. I was very lucky to have a hairdresser do this on my locks, but I’ve done a bit of research and here’s some simple tips for achieving this style on your own. You will need hair spray, a comb, hairbands and a lot of patience!

Firstly, it actually works better if your hair isn’t squeaky clean. A bit gross I know, but greasy hair is actually preferable; or at least a few-days-old hair. This is because the hair isn’t so flyaway and easy to move around.

Make sure you use a comb to section your hair into a centre parting, all the way down to the nape of your neck. Then, take one section and clip it out the way- work on one side first. What you are basically doing, is plaiting one side of your hair into a French plait, so divide the side you are working on into three sections, and start to braid, all the way down to your neck.  You want the plait to be central to your head, so remember this whilst platting, and use your ear as a guide; a kind of arch that the plait goes around.

Once you get to the nape of your neck, begin to plait the pony tale until it reaches the end of the hair, and secure with a hairband. Then repeat on the other side. Voila!

I think the plaits look better when they are that little but tighter, as the plait itself stands out more. Spray with lots of hairspray, and you’re ready to roll!!

This type of style is perfect for gals on the go, as your hair is completely out of your way. Fab for the gym, and equally beneficial if it’s a hot day! I also like the fact that your ears aren’t covered- they become centre stage, so add ear cuffs, hoops and sparkly pieces galore!
